John Benitez Afro-Latin Bop Group

Join us for an FREE evening of Latin Jazz classics with NYC’s own John Benitez co-presented by Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art and Storytelling, curated by the Jazz Foundation of America, and made possible by the Coalition of Theatres of Color, the NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs, and the West Harlem Development Corporation.

About the Artist:

Grammy award-winning latin bassist John Benitez cut his teeth in Puerto Rico and has made a name for himself through his work with many well-known American and Latin artists.

Bassist/composer/arranger John Benitez was a widely acclaimed musician in the jazz, R&B, and Latin scenes in his native Puerto Rico by the age of 19. He studied at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music with master bassist Federico Silva. He also studied in NYC with legendary acoustic bassist Ron Carter and electric bass guitarist Anthony Jackson. A Grammy award-winning musician, Benitez has performed with many well-known American and Latin artists including Lucecita Benitez, Batacumbele, Justo Betancourt, Joe Madrid, Wynton Marsalis, Cuco Pena, Tito Puente, Lalo Rodriguez, Hilton Ruiz, Dave Samuels, Chucho Valdez and Bobby Watson. Benitez has also recorded with numerous performers such as David Sanchez, Eddie Palmieri and Roy Hargrove’s Grammy award-winning Crisol Band.

“What I love about Markbass amps and speakers is that there’s a connection between portability, purity and clarity in the sound, and a lot of punch and fatness that helps me to create and discover sounds in an enjoyable way,” says John. “All over the world people are amazed by the sound and portability of Markbass amps and cabinets.”
