West Harlem Jazz Festival: Gabriel Chakarji Quartet

On June 6th at Jackie Robinson Park (Bandshell – 116 Bradhurst Ave, NYC, NY 10039) from 5:00-6:30pm, the Gabriel Chakarji Quartet will present a fresh array of original compositions and innovative arrangements. This special performance promises a musical journey through South American and Caribbean styles and inventive reinterpretations of jazz classics by Ornette Coleman and Thelonious Monk. A concert not to be missed by those who appreciate the evolving landscape of contemporary jazz!

This event is part of the ongoing 3rd annual West Harlem Summer Jazz Festival, which lasts May 2nd through September 13th; this festival presents FREE live outdoor concerts, provided through a collaboration between the West Harlem Arts Alliance (WHAA) West Harlem Development Corporation (WHDC), NYC Parks, Harlem Late Night Jazz, the National Jazz Museum in Harlem (NJMH), IAMCHELSEAIAM, and the Montefiore Park Neighborhood Association.

Gabriel Chakarji is a GRAMMY award-winning pianist and composer known for his unique blend of Venezuelan and New York City jazz music. Growing up in Caracas, Gabriel was exposed to a rich variety of musical styles, including Afro-Venezuelan folk, Caribbean, and Brazilian music, in addition to jazz, and gospel hymns. He eventually moved to New York City to explore new musical frontiers and has since performed at some of the city’s most iconic venues, including Carnegie Hall, Blue Note, and Dizzy’s Club. Gabriel has released two critically acclaimed albums as a bandleader: “Vida” and “New Beginning”. His composition “Enredadera” was nominated for best jazz single at the 20th edition of the Independent Music Awards in New York City. In 2022, Gabriel was awarded the prestigious Jazz Gallery Residency Commission and the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award.
Funding for the summer-long presentation of free Jazz in West Harlem Parks comes from the West Harlem Development Corporation and the NYC Green Fund of the City Parks Foundation.
