Live from Harlem – JFA Presents: Chief Baba Neil Clarke’s Brooklyn Bougarabou Project

Best known for his many years playing in Randy Weston’s African Rhythms group, percussion master Chief Baba Neil Clarke has also worked with Harry Belafonte, Dianne Reeves, Norman Connors, Onaje Allan Gumbs, and Tulivu-Donna Cumberbatch. This Black History Month presentation features the Bougarabou drums of West Africa, while touching on poetry and bebop tonalities, with special attention on the role of Afro-diasporic hand-drumming in the history of jazz.

This event is free and open to the public!

This event will also stream on the Jazz Foundation and Jazz Museum Facebook pages and the Museum YouTube Channel.

This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and by the Howard Gilman Foundation.
