Brain science meets live jazz: Big ideas in neuroscience, brought to life through song.
How does a small change in underlying instructions transform the big picture?
Join us for Music on the Brain, an informal dialogue and live performance featuring pianist and vocalist Kelly Green alongside neuroscientist Panagiota (Julie) Apostolou (Zuckerman Institute).
Through live music and conversation, we will explore the concept of “variation on a theme”โcomparing how subtle genetic shifts alter neural wiring in schizophrenia to how jazz musicians transform shared musical structures. Together, Kelly and Julie will examine the thin line between altered perception and artistic output, reflecting on iconic figures like Bud Powell to discuss creativity, mental disorders, and the human experience.

A Change in Mind

Brain science meets live jazz: Big ideas in neuroscience, brought to life through song.
Join us for the next edition of Music on the Brain on Thursday, October 8 (7โ8 PM) at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem (@natljazzmusuem)!
Weโre bringing composer, pianist & vocalist Kelly Green (@kellygreenpiano) into a conversation with neuroscientist Dr. Panagiota (Julie) Apostolou (@zuckermaninstitute) to explore the idea of “variation on a theme”.
Just as a subtle shift in harmony transforms a jazz song, a small change in genetic instructions can alter how brain cells communicate.
