Join NYC Parks for the 4th Annual Jackie Robinson Day Festival! This free, family-friendly, rain-or-shine event celebrates the legacy and contributions of New York City legend Jackie Robinson to sports and the civil rights movement. Activities include live music and performances, baseball clinics and games, jumbo games, arts and crafts, local food trucks, and information from community organizations.
The Festival will take place at Jackie Robinson Park in Harlem, and will last from 12pm through 4pm. Performances will occur at the Bandshell, W. 148th St and Bradhurst Ave.
This show is presented in collaboration with West Harlem Arts Alliance, Historic Harlem Parks, and NYC Parks, with support from the West Harlem Development Corporation.
Bruce Edwards:
Guitarist and composer Bruce Edwards was a member of Sun Ra’s Arkestra from 1984-1992, traveling all over the planet and appearing on recordings such as “Sun Ra Sextet Live at the Village Vanguard”, “Destination Unknown”, “A Night in East Berlin”, and more. In addition, he has performed and recorded with artists such as James Carter, Gary Bartz, Charles Tolliver, Pharaoh Sanders, and Ge Smith and Lenny Pickett of the Saturday Night Live Band, to name a few. Called a “master of his instrument” by John Kelman (All About Jazz), he is also recognized by many he plays with as an inspiring and inventive accompanist, and a fiery and creative soloist. Also an accomplished composer and producer for films and TV, Edwards won a Telly Award for his original music and sound design in 2006. He also teaches guitar for JazzMobile, the New School, and privately.
Beverly Crosby:
Vocalist Beverly Crosby has developed a soul-stirring sound with a message, incorporating shades of blues, gospel, jazz, rock and a little bit of country. She has toured with such varied acts as the Brooklyn gospel group The Patterson Singers, the famed pop group The Crystals, and 70s funk outfit Stuff. In addition to extensive work in off-Broadway productions, she has produced her own work and mentored others through her 501(C)3 non-profit Tanyard Musical Ambassadors. She has been inducted into the Music Hall of Fame of her hometown, Pensacola, FL, and has been honored by the NAACP of Upper Manhattan.
