Live from Harlem: JFA Presents – Kuni Mikami

Kuni Mikami is a New York–based jazz pianist whose distinguished career spans more than four decades. Born in Japan, Mikami moved to New York in 1974 to immerse himself in the birthplace of jazz and became the first Japanese student of the legendary pianist Barry Harris. Mikami has performed with some of the most celebrated figures in jazz including Lionel Hampton, Illinois Jacquet, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, experiences that have shaped his authentic swing style and deep appreciation for the great jazz tradition. His performances reflect a rare combination of technical mastery, lyrical sensitivity, and an infectious sense of rhythm that captivates audiences around the world. His lifelong mission has been to strengthen the cultural connection between Japan and the United States through music, demonstrating jazz’s universal ability to inspire communication and understanding.

Today, Kuni Mikami continues to perform actively while leading innovative musical projects that celebrate both the rich heritage of jazz and the evolution of contemporary music. His enduring dedication to excellence has earned him the respect of fellow musicians and the admiration of audiences wherever he performs.
