The African Rhythms Alumni Quintet bears direct witness to the late NEA Jazz Master Dr. Randy Weston’s brilliant integration of African aesthetics with the spirit of jazz that was cultivated by piano legends like Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk, Count Basie, Nat King Cole, and Earl Hines. The sonic foundations of Weston’s trailblazing style include the dynamic drum polyrhythms of West Africa, the use of jazz horns and plucked guitars from Ghanaian highlife music, and Ellington’s orchestral approach to the piano. In celebrating Weston’s centennial year, the esteemed members of his African Rhythms band have rejoined forces to pay tribute to their exceptional leader: T.K. Blue (saxophone/flute/musical director), Chief Baba Neil Clarke (percussion), Alex Blake (bass), Ku-umba Frank Lacy (trombone), and Sharp Radway (piano).
Additionally, this concert will include a special interview & performance feature from another longtime Weston collaborator, bassist Vishnu Wood.
Presented in partnership with the Jazz Foundation of America, supported in part by an award from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and by the Howard Gilman Foundation.
