National Jazz Museum in Harlem
Bassist Billy Johnson was born in Milwaukee to the legendary local performer and singing pioneer, William “Scat” Johnson. The oldest of five children, Billy was immersed in music from birth, eventually studying at the Wisconsin Conservatory College of Music. In 1979, he joined his younger brother, drummer Mark Johnson, in New York City, where he went on to work with George Braith, Abbey Lincoln, Lionel Hampton, Wallace Roney, Marc Cary, Geri Allen, and Arthur Taylor–in the final lineup of Taylor’s Wailers. He played the 1992 presidential inauguration with Illinois Jacquet. He has worked in theatre and in education, and continues to train younger musicians in his own band.
