Pedrito Martinez @ AFRIBEMBÉ FESTIVAL

As part of our month-long Celebrating the Afro-Latin Roots of Jazz programming, The National Jazz Museum in Harlem partners with Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute to present Cuban percussionist and bandleader Pedrito Martinez at CCCADI’s 5th Annual AFRIBEMBÉ FESTIVAL.  The festival runs from noon-6pm and a detailed schedule will be announced closer to the festival.

AFRIBEMBÉ’s featured artists and DJ lineup will utilize global Diasporic rhythms and sounds to move festival goers through statements of Black identity, agency and freedom.

Through activities in the Family Village, the SoulFull Food Plaza, the Ujamaa Marketplace, and our Sankofa Tribute to the late Greg Tate, AFRIBEMBÉ intentionally seeks to inspire our community to envision and create a liberated future for the entire African Diaspora.

Bembé Stage:

  • Pedrito Martinez
  • Combo Chimbita
  • DJ Bembona

AFRIBEMBÉ will feature an excerpt from the funky, post-apocalyptic, Afrofuturist play, “In the Valley of Coming Forth”, by CCCADI alum, Hameed Sharif “Herukhuti” Williams, Ph.D.

This year’s festival makes a special call to remember that our ancestors consistently pushed toward creating a future that stretched beyond the reality of their present. Let’s tap into our shared art and culture to do the same.

The word Bembé is an African word carried throughout the Diaspora with various meanings. From drumming, to rhythm, to party, we utilize the word Bembé as one of terms that connects our Diaspora together in music, joy and community.
