Jazz & The Creative Influence of Islam: A Night of Music

Expressions: Creative Music and Image
Wadada Leo Smith
Maryam Kashani
For decades, Wadada Leo Smith, trumpeter, composer, and author has been active as a performing artist, hoping that through his music he can help make the world a better place. Maryam Kashani is a filmmaker, music person, and writer whose work explores landscape, public/private history, and what is possible. Smith and Kashani will have an intimate conversation and share excerpts from their current work in progress: performance and cinematography as a duet. In their sound-image project, creativity, and practices, they explore artistic expression captured through an observable impression of sonic-imagery centered in music.
This ongoing series highlights the contributions of Islam and Muslims in the birth and continued growth of jazz. These discussions and concerts are fundamental to changing conversations and attitudes about “belonging” in the history of jazz for Muslims and for other marginalized groups.
Our fall 2022 Jazz & Islam series is curated by Asad Ali Jafri and made possible with support from the Humanities New York SHARP Action Grant.
